Taylor Lautner Lands Lead Role in "Cancun"

SNL Screen Cap Bow Staff

Taylor Lautner will be teaming up with Summit Entertainment, the producers of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," in a new action flick called "Cancun."

This film is the tale of vacationers held hostage by a drug cartel; Lautner’s character fights to rescue them using his martial skills. This will be the first project from the newly established production shingle he shares with his dad, Dan Lautner.

I'm not sure what to think of this film. Do you think the movie has the potential to be a hit?

I hope it does well for Taylor's sake. It prolly will since he is in it. I can't wait to see it. :)

Sorry Ladies and Taylor but I have to sing a bad tunes, this so like a cheesy movie i am sorry, there is such a thing as a bad career move and this is one of them, plus summit is not know for it's good movie roles, I would love him to be in something from major players with good writers and good directors, sometimes it good to be selective and not just jump into the first movie your offered. I would see it i wait for the DVD i can see it good to be painful to watch. "Don't do it taylor take me stupid advice Hollywood just looking for a reason to bash you don't give it to them your young wait a big, be selective branch out.

I honestly don't know what to think either. Judging by the very, very brief plot summary they've given us, the movie sounds really bland and cliched. It doesn't sound like some big production action movie like the oens you think Tom Cruise or Jason Statham would be in. And it definitely isn't a comedy-action/martial arts movie like the ones Jackie Chan would be in.

So honestly, for the sake of Taylor's career I hope it does well.

It doesn't sound like it will be a good movie but since Taylor's in it I'll definitely see it at least three times before it leaves theatres.

Hmmmmm I am not going to sing a negative or postive song until it is seen, it sounds kinda like LOST to me, just because it doesn't sound like it'll be magnifisent doesn't mean it won't be, besides I think what he is doing is smart! Spread your herizons the fear of striking out can't keep you from playing the game! Even if it does flop you can't make perfect movies all the time, eventually he'll be in one that doesn't sore, but if it intrugues him he should do it, he should act for himself, and not for what others may find prominent or not. I say either way he should do as many movies as he wants terrible or fantastic, it doesn't matter, because he shouldn't be acting for anyone but himself.

no one is saying don't do stuff, but i'm just saying don't kill your career before you get a career, plus summit sucks, look at the movie whatever it is called Robs did with summit what the hay, double 007 was in and what now, god if Twilight didn't have a fan base already, the movie wouldn't have done well, I know and i see great potential in him and he is eager to be great, he just needs good leaders and teachers, i would rather he does 2 good movie a year than 100 crap, that my point

plus he is already doing Max Steel what's the need for this crap sorry summit is trying to milk their golden cow they don't care how it affects his acting cv, it all about the dollars with them.

yeah itll be a hit MOSTLY, if not ALL because taylor's in it :D i know ill be seeing it. and max steel. and maybe valentine's day. :O

I kind of felt the same way that the movie doesn't sound that good. I have hear Taylor say in interviews that he wants to do action movies, but I would love to see him in a romantic comedy.

It sounds a bit cheesy, aswell as along the lines of Sharkboy, with the whole martial arts stuff

I'm assuming from the comments that none of y'all have actually seen either the original Die Hard OR Taken. I saw Die Hard in the theaters and Taken on DVD recently. Two excellent films. In both cases they are actually the *uncheesey* version of action. In each you have strong but "normal" men who go after real world type bad guys in order to save those they care most about. The threat is something that could actually happen to you or me which is way scarier than the threat in most action films. Compare and contrast to the cloak and dagger, international thriller, over the top action stuff. That's what's cheesey. Fun to watch if well done but not the sort of thing that real people would ever find themselves up against. Whereas if the person you loved most in this world was put in danger by piece of *&^% creeps out to make a dishonest buck, wouldn't you use everything you had to take them down and save your family. Everything. People actually do that in the real world and we call them heroes for it. Remember 9/11 and to quote a country singer from my hometown "some went down like heroes in that Pennsylvania field"? Those passengers went up against what they knew were basically insurmountable odds and they prevented terrorists from destroying the White House by attacking the terrorists and crashing the plane. Anyone who calls that cheesey I'll personally slap in an attempt to knock some intelligence into them. While I'll watch Bond or Jackie Chan, they do not emotionally engage me the way movies like the original Die Hard and Taken did. Taylor has made good choices so far and presumedly he was impressed by the script. It's a spec so it's something the writers wanted to write rather than a "to order" for a studio like Max Steel will be. We've seen Taylor's ability to capture our emotions in New Moon and his athletic skills far surpass the majority of action stars. I think Cancun sounds like a much better option for a fan of Matt Damon and Denzel Washington, two real actors who sometimes do action--always assuming it's a good script and a good director and for now we have to trust Taylor and his daddy to make sure of that.

Please people keep your comments to one or two lines. My brain hurts now, I'm a guy and we only use about 20% of our brains and that just used up all of .

I totally agree!

"It's a shame his management team is not looking further into his performing skills and possibilities since he really got some serious acting capabilities. He was excellent in the "New Moon", especially if you take his age and working experience into consideration. He's got talent, it would be a shame if it's not nurtured by more thoughtful roles, beyond obvious and more generic ones."

i'd like to see him one day take on a romance/drama or comedy or a more thought provoking movie, something more thoughtful like the ones kristen has done or robert. i'd like to see him challenge himself and branch into other genres not just action. cos if he does only that, that's all he might ever be known for or hired for.

Let's not forget Taylor is a kid at heart and he is a good son so if his father/company says give it a try he will, I never said that this would make money and sure why not join the rest of hollywood and make chessy films he wouldn't be the first and he sure wouldn't be the last, I just saying don't get type casted, we all know he kicks ass just show us what esle you can do..

Any movie with Taylor Lautner is a good movie.

but the plot for this movie sounds kinda crappy and cheesey. I might just see it cause hes in it, but nothing really else bring me in to see it.

it may be good who knows.... it seems more like an action/adventure movie thats for like guys to watch and stuff... thats why girls won't really be inerested in it.... idk i need to see more from this for me to give out my opinion

but i'm proud that he's getting all kinds of roles.

oh nd i also heard in this radio station in the morning that the "twilight saga might be ending now because taylor lautner became a personal trainer and stuff"... MY BUTTCHEEK!!!

What really?! They aren't makign Breaking Dawn? What a bummer all three except the last one! Oh and I do want ot see Valintine's Day it's got all kidns of good actors in it. I think Cancun has potential, and Summit may be milking their Golden Cow for some bucks, but Tay's not complainign so it msut nto be that torcherous. I Say HAY HAY I'll PAY to see. Well maybe not.... idk.....

Really? He's going to be in an action flick? Yayyy! He should be a ninja in that movie! Since he's incredibly talented, he would impress everyone with his martial arts skills! =)

ahh u people are crazy it wont ruin his carrer, it will be a change from the normal stuff, im defenitly going to go see it, i love him and i'll go see any movie he does

At first I thought this wasn't good for his career but I just re-watched Taylor on SNL with my brother. My brother loved all his martial arts moves in his monologue. Taylor has all the girls so maybe this will get him all the boys too.

Like Kira mentioned, I think Taylor would be great in a Jackie Chan type martial arts comedy. Based on his SNL performance, he can be super funny! Summit isn't known for big budget movies, and they got super lucky with Twilight. If a bigger production company was releasing it, I would have a better feeling about it.

I hope this is a rumor:/ it doesn't sound interesting
at all. maybe if it was a book then yeah. but the plot does nothing for me. I know it'll sell because of tay though lol. it sounds really cheesy and obvious.

I agree with what Gen said above also apart from my earlier comment. However, I simply feel that the plot of 'Cancun' is a bit simple and Summit isn't exactly known for producing good movies. What's more, 'Tailor Made' is a NEW production company that Taylor and his dad have started, and though they're partnering with several others to produce this movie, it still sounds a bit dodgy.

All the best to Taylor, though! I'll be praying for him.

So his new production company is "Tailor Made" or "Taylor Made?" I suppose the latter is a bit too obvious! I'm curious about this new company.

Sounds like "Wrong Turn", Or that one movie they just did about the couple vacationing on the island with the serial killers? B movie at best. Any way what happens in cancun stays in cancun.

So I do agree with skyhigh and Gen even though she made me use up all of .

There are a bunch of movies about vacations gone wrong.... I can't even remember the name of the last movie with a similar story line.

It sounds kind of cliche tbh. But I can't really judge from that brief summary. I think Taylor should go for more roles that don't require his martial art skills because pretty soon he's going to be stereotyped as an actor who can only do action roles and nothing else. I would love to see him in a drama or romcom.

it is kind of cliche but sounds much more interesting to me and less cheesy than max steel or valentine's day but i totally agree with you on the latter = "I think Taylor should go for more roles that don't require his martial art skills because pretty soon he's going to be stereotyped as an actor who can only do action roles and nothing else. I would love to see him in a drama or romcom."

but those are his fave kind ofs films and its his dream to be an action star like denzel and matt damon, his idols so we can't reall blame him. i hope he does well in anything he does though. :)

this movie sounds more interesting and a lot better than Valentine's Day and especially better than Max Steel which has cheese written all over it.

but im really surprised he's started his own production "company" or something like it with his dad and so young too but then again im not too surprised (besides the fact he's loaded now and needs to invest some of his $ or Uncle Sam will come down on his money for taxes) but he did say acting he'd like to get behind the camera as well, like direct or write although having your own production shingle whatever that means is not the same i think. (does it mean he's proudcing it or its just part of his company? anyone care to tell me?) i bet he'd be good at doing that too. :)

I think that he will be awesome in an action movie, have you guys seen him in action in the 2003 world championship of xmartial arts? hes amazing. I am really excited that he is doing more action, and I dont believe that he will be stereotyped because now hes done comedy(SNL), and drama(Twilight saga), and romantic comedy when valentines day is finished. I always give people the benefit of the doubt a good actor can make any movie good. I think he will be good in anything, He's Taylor Lautner. On New moon the scene when he climbed up into her bedroom window was a hot scene and he did his own stunts, he really climbed up the tree that way it was sexy how could you not want more of that?

There's no doubt that he'll be good at performing stunts and showing off his martial arts skills. I think the concern is more about the plot and writing. Your stunts are only as good as the writing, with the exception of really big budget movies like "Transformers." I didn't think the story line was very good, but the special effects were awesome and people paid to see that!

any movie with taylor lautner is a good movie. i like the whole being held hostage because i really like crime shows and stufff and i cant wait to see him show off his martial arts skills hes amazing :)

HE HAS HIS ENTIRE LIFE TO GET SERIOUS ROLES YOUR ACTING LIKE HE'S IN HIS LATE TWENTIES LIKE RIGHT NOW HE IS 17

CANCUN IS A GOOD MOVE

TAYLOR NEEDS TO BANISH THE JACOB IMAGE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO DO THIS THAN GETTING INTO AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT GENRE OF MOVIE - ACTION

IF CANCUN REFLECTS POSITIVELY AT THE BOX OFFICE WHICH IT SHOULD THEN HE WILL GET OFFERS TO DO MORE MOVIE ROLES LIKE COMEDY ROLES ETC ETC

RIGHT NOW HE NEEDS TO SHOW EVERYONE HOW VERSATILE HE IS IF HE CAN EXCEL AS JACOB BLACK AND EXCEL AS A NINJA/FIGHTER THE SKY IS THE LIMIT FOR HIM HE HAS COMEDY CHOPS TOO AS SEEN ON SNL -TAYLOR SHOULD UTILISE ALL HIS TALENT NO ONE AT THE AGE OF 17 GETS OFFERS TO STAR IN ACTION MOVIES

This is the most sexiest boy ever and hes awesioem i saw him in newyork <3 I LOVE HIm!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I THINK IT DOES HAVE THE POTENTIAL I MEAN IF HE IS DOING HIS OWN MARTAL ARTS THEN HELL YEA

plot sounds a little bland, but we'll have to see. For gods sake I hope he doesn't sign up for anything else. If both Max Steel (flunk alert) and this end up not doing well, his career will have been well and truly slammed before it ever got the chance. He's definately not doing himself any favours signing up for this, thats what I think. Its too early.

And his dad is setting up a production company?! this seem a bit over-much to anyone else? His dad is a pilot- he knows nothing about the industry! This all just seems too weird to me.

You can't just say he's young he has his whole life ahead of him to make movies. Hollywood has a tendency to forget real quick and your only as good as your last movie. They might be a little more reluctant to to throw boat loads of money at you if you keep turning out flops. This is going to be a continued process where he's going to have to keep proving himself that he can take it to the next level and marque a movie. He's no longer just the "Fresh Face" he needs to become established. With the spot light success of Twilight driving him to the top it also brings the attention of many critics, who might not want to see him fail, but more or less expect him too.

And a lot of new to the industry people or even screen legends open there own production company so they can be partners in ventures like this. Most likely for another percentage of BOX Office take. Or just to produce movies on their own as another form of income. You would be surprised with who owns what and where the money is going in Hollywood.

His dad probably came up with Cancun idea just to shoot on location and take a vacation. Pretty smart if you ask me. And if they spin this movie in a way that is true to Taylor's martial arts back ground, like "he is a Karate champion who had some terrorists mess with the wrong family" type of movie it might have a chance. But even that has been over done. How many bank robbery movies have they done where they take the bank manager's family hostage and then Bruce Willis has to go in and save the day?

If he plays the unlikely hero like some of my favorite movies "Unlawful Entry" or "Breakdown" with Kurt Russell then I think it will do well. But as Taylor fans you gotta support him through thick and thin, Small and Tall, Top and Flop.

He's SO HOT it don't matter what movie he's in. It will be good.

Love you taytay

of course the movie is gonna be a hit. If Taylor's in there, everyone's gonna watch it.

Hmm... it depends how cheesey it is. If it's not cheesey it should be an awesome movie.

With Taylor lautner as a lead it should be good. (:

I plan to see every taylor lautner movie. (:
